PEFC
The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) schemes is an international umbrella organisation for the mutual recognition of independent national or sub-national forest certification schemes.
The PEFC is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental
organisation, founded in 1999 which promotes sustainably managed
forests through independent third party certification. The PEFC
provides an assurance mechanism to purchasers of wood and paper
products that they are promoting the sustainable management of
forests.
PEFC provides a common PEFC Logo for labelling of those products which
originate in forests certified according to the PEFC-endorsed
schemes.

Chain of custody and product labelling
There are three systems available for an applicant to comply with the chain-of-custody requirements. One system requires clients to physically separate and segregate certified wood from different origins at all phases of transportation, production, distribution, sale and export. In the second approach, the total batch of products can be labelled as certified when the amount of certified material in the input batch exceeds the set minimum average threshold. In the third approach, a perecent of the batch of products can be labelled as certified material, matching the percent of incoming material that was certified.
Only products exceeding 70% content of certified raw materials and PEFC recycled raw material can be marked with the PEFC logo. The PEFC logo license number must be used together with the logo. No further detail is required beyond the logo on PEFC certified products, however some organisations may choose to include the appropriate PEFC claim, as described in the cases below.
Labels consisting of the above may also contain voluntary information: the forest management certification or the chain-of-custody certification register number, the name or designated letters of the issuing accredited certification body, the issuing accredited certification body’s own logo or mark in addition to the PEFC logo and/or a product description.

If you purchase a product that has one of these labels, it is Category A Evidence and is considered to be both legal and sustainable by the UK Government’s definition, provided that a minimum of 70% of the material is from a certified source. However, if you purchase it from a non-certified supplier, the product’s form or packaging cannot have changed from the time that it left the certified supplier.
