CPET activities

January 2010

April ForestWe hope you all have made it safely in to the New Year and that it will be a happy one. Despite the snow which caused a number of meetings to be cancelled the past month has been busy. First of all we have something to celebrate; Social criteria have now been included in the Government’s sustainability definition. The inclusion was announced by Hilary Benn MP on 20th January. The inclusion of social criteria clearly adds the last pillar to sustainability and closer aligns the UK Government sustainability definition with the other public procurement policies’ and international definitions. Read more here.

With 2010 it is also time for the Technical Panel’s biennial review of the forest certification schemes. The guidance to review the schemes will be updated to include the new social criteria and as we are updating the guidance anyway, we will also be doing a general update and include two new clarifying guidance criteria on ‘conversion’ and ‘national schemes’. Read more about the consultation on the new criteria here.

Following the changes to the policy in April 2009, CPET is keen to understand what progress has been made in implementation of the policy across central government departments. We have recently been contacting relevant staff in each central government department to discuss their progress and offer CPET support and resources for any timber procurement issues related to the policy. If you are have any questions or need advice then please contact the helpline or send an email to cpet@proforest.net

Our workshop in London on the 27th was well attended and we had a good day with engaged attendees. The next month’s workshops will take us around the country again to Nottingham, Wakefield in West Yorkshire, Newcastle and Swansea. The next workshop in London is scheduled for March 17th and you can sign up to a workshop here.

The CPET website has now got a new web address and you can now also reach the CPET website via www.cpet.org.uk, but the old web link will continue to also direct you to the CPET website.
