Looking forward: CPET events in 2010

2009 has been a great year for CPET as our efforts to communicate and implement the UK government timber procurement policy started to gather pace. In addition to its work with central government CPET now also has a role in promoting the adoption of sustainable timber procurement policies in the wider public sector.

In 2010 we are planning on continuing the awareness raising work and in order to increase knowledge and implementation of the policy across the widest audience we will have a stall at a number of trade shows and exhibitions across the country. From March 2^nd – 4^th we will have a stall at the popular Ecobuild exhibition. Ecobuild will host over 850 exhibitors from across industry and will include the Timber works area, dedicated to timber products and timber related services. We will be on hand in the Timber Works area to offer advice and assistance to private and public sector suppliers and buyers about the requirements of the policy, and how they can ensure compliance.

CPET is working to encourage the implementation of responsible timber procurement policies across the public sector so as to align all sectors with the UK government policy and create a ‘level playing field’. To aid in helping public sector organisations and their suppliers and contractors to understand how to develop and implement a policy we will hosting a stall at the Guardian Public Procurement Show in London Excel on the 15^th and 16^th June.

In addition, we have been working with WWF and the Timber trade Federation to promote responsible timber procurement in Local Authorities. Local Authorities are increasingly aware of the issue of sustainability and sustainable procurement and have made some  progress in this area, but few have implemented timber procurement policies and more work is needed.  From the 6^th – 8^th July 2010, we will be on hand at the Local Government Association Annual Conference to provide advice and assistance about the government policy and how Local Authorities can take some simple steps to ensure that their timber products are procured from legal and sustainable sources.
