The new team at DEFRA
Since the retirement of Bob Andrew in August; Defra have re-organised and re-appointed to support the implementation of its timber procurement policy.
Jenny McInnes has been the established Defra policy lead on illegal logging policy for some time; with a particular focus on FLEGT issues. This area is clearly closely linked with the government’s policy so it was an obvious move to extend her responsibility to timber procurement in September following Bob’s departure. Jenny has had several years in Defra joining in 2005 to work in better regulation policy, and then moving to the central EU and International Coordination Division. Prior to working in the civil service, Jenny worked in the voluntary sector for several years in sustainable development and education. Jenny has an academic background in Biological Sciences, with particular specialisms in forestry and ecology.
To further strengthen the team and provide additional full-time resource Marigold Norman, reporting to Jenny, was appointed the new policy lead on timber procurement. She took on the role at the beginning of October 2007 when she joined Defra. Marigold is not new to working in the public sector, having spent some time working in NHS procurement. Prior to that she worked in policy and PR at a health research charity. She read Geography at Cambridge University and specialised in political and environmental policy.
The new timber procurement team members will bring invaluable experience and knowledge to their respective roles. Both Jenny and Marigold are supported and advised by Claire Treliving who has been part of the Defra procurement team for some time now. She provides part-time procurement expertise on timber as the other half of her time is dedicated to food procurement.
