9.      Introduction to the policy for local authorities

This is what some local authorities we have worked with have to say about adopting a responsible timber procurement policy:

Bill Kirkup, NE Regional Improvement and Efficiency Partnership and Peter Faill, Durham County Council:

“Sustainable timber procurement is in our view a significant quick win for local authorities and other public sector bodies, bespoke policies now exist, their implementation should lead to tangible environmental and social benefits, there is little or no financial penalty, the industry is supportive and extensive practical support is available from CPET. In short we feel that all local authorities should give serious consideration to the adoption of a sustainable timber procurement policy as part of their wider efforts to improve the sustainability of the public sector estate”.

Jon Lissimore, from the London Borough of Lambeth, who have been members of the WWF UK Forest & Trade Network since 2002:

“Local Authorities should be championing the approach of adopting a proper policy for sustainable timber procurement. It doesn't need to be overbearing. If Local Authorities make a policy statement, train staff, talk to the FSC and use CPET, I think we can make a huge difference”.
