Government procurement of timber in Norway

As part of the Plan of Action for Environmental and Social Responsibility in Public Procurement, adopted in June 2007, the Norweign Government has made a commitment to exclude tropical timber from buildings and materials used in the building process.  The policy applies to public sector procurement.

Other products such as paper, furniture and biomass are not covered by the policy.

The policy aim is to halt trade with non-sustainable and illegally harvested tropical forest products, and the Government has indicated that for their policy, no international or national certification schemes can satisfactorily ensure that the timber products imported are legally and sustainabily produced.

The Ministry of Environment published the Plan of Action, and the policy will be implemented through the work of the Directorate of Public Construction and Property.
